A Sad Day

Remember this? I do.

It was the 2006 playoffs, and the Cowboys were playing the Seahawks. The Cowboys had somehow managed to let the game spiral out of control, yet they were one field goal away from winning the game and moving to the next round. Then, the unthinkable happened. As the ball is snapped to Romo, he drops it on the ground. In an effort to get the first down, Romo picked the ball up and attempted to run for the first down, but was shoestring tackled right before the first down line. It was an extremely sad moment for my family and for all Dallas area fans.

Now, as a Houston-area sports fan, I have become very accustom to terrible sports and close losses as we are the best at being mediocre. Seriously, Houston sports is the most ruthless sporting area to be a fan in. But Dallas, that's a different story. You have the Mavericks and your seven-foot German Superman, Josh Hamilton and the Rangers and America's Team - The Cowboys. That should be at least one championship every year, right?

But, unfortunately, the Texas Rangers couldn't pull it out. The Rangers did what the Aggies usually do: play terribly in the second half (granted, it was the second half of the series). It's extremely sad to see your team get that close and blow it (remember when my Astros got to the World Series?).

However, if you're a Dallas area sports fan, you're probably screaming at your computer about how I forgot about the Mavericks' winning it all. I didn't. That's the point: you've still got relevancy in every sport. So don't feel bad for yourself; be happy that your team's can actually compete in sports.

Sincerely,
A Houston area sports fan

Thank You Nelson Cruz!

Big fella, big sella
I know baseball is somewhat on the decline in America thanks to it's more violent competitor, football, but what the Rangers and, more specifically, Nelson Cruz have been doing this post-season cannot go unnoticed. As an Astros fan, when the playoffs come around, it's just a sad sad time. But my allegiance to the state of Texas has made me watch my share of Rangers post-season games. The more games that I watch, the more I fell in love with one player: Nelson Cruz. So, as an extension of all slightly-moderately overweight men everywhere, I would like to personally thank Nelson Cruz for making our archetype look good.

Before I thank you, I want you to understand one thing: this isn't a back-handed complement. It's a sincere appreciation for what you do. Nelson Cruz makes us Paul Blart-esque guys look good. Not only did he hit the only walk-off grand slam in MLB playoff history, but he's been hitting lights out against a great Detroit Tigers team. Nelson, thank you for proving that those extra few hot dogs won't bog us down. Thank you for showing that the few stretch marks we have don't outweigh (pun intended) how agile we can be. And most of all, thank you for making being chubby A-Okay.

Nelson Cruz, I salute you!

Let Me Explain...

Before you scroll down and read my first (lengthy and probably grammatically unsound) post, let me explain to you what you're looking at.

My name is Nick Veraldi. This my comedic sports blog. Essentially all this was made for is the spreading of my opinion's about the world of sports. I watch sports a lot, and I make fun of things a lot being a stand-up comedian. It only made sense to make fun of and share my opinion about the sports world. As far my writing goes, I took Journalism in high school for a year, so I don't have the best credentials.

If you stuck with me this far, I can promise you this much: you will (most likely) be more informed about sports, happier about life and chuckle at some of the stupid stuff I write.

Tim Tebow Named Broncos' QB

Divine intervention?
As I'm sure many of you already know, Tim Tebow has uprooted Kyle Orton for the starting quarterback job in Denver. Beyond the obvious reasons, (Orton's terrible play, the lack of a running game, etc.) Tebow's energy and overall football IQ should have had him starting way earlier than now. It's pretty obvious that the Broncos perform better when he's in just by watching the team. I caught the end of the Broncos-Chargers game, and from what I saw, the entire Broncos squad played as if they had a shot at winning. Realistically, the team had a less than stellar chance to win; most teams with a minute or less left on the clock tend to choke in huge games. Yet the Tebow-lead Broncos (helped by Brandon Lloyd's amazing catch) stormed down the field and gave the fans something to watch. Every Broncos fan watching that game took note of just how good Tebow actually is.

I'm not saying that Tim Tebow is the Batman to the Broncos' Gotham City. I just think that someone with his talent deserves a chance, and there's no better chance than now. The Dave Grohl look-alike Kyle Orton is playing terribly, the team is 1-4 and the offense needs some sort of spark.

Yes, I'm defending him fiercely because he's a devout Christian dedicated to spreading the Gospel; playing on the Broncos makes you need God to save you. And yes, I do think his athleticism is fun to watch. Who cares? He's a good guy with a great arm. Plus, some people say I look like him, so that makes me like him even more.

Ya feelin' it?
